City of Hampton releases update on oil spill reported Oct. 14
Officials in the city of Hampton have released information about an oil spill within the community.
City, state and federal authorities have been monitoring the spread and cleanup of 3,000 to 3,500 gallons of used motor oil that leaked from an old oil tank at the back of a building in the 2100 block of Mingee Drive and into a tidal drainage ditch just a few yards away.
The spill took place Oct. 14. By Oct. 17, the oil was following a series of connecting ditches and made its way from the spill site to Newmarket Creek and Gordon Cooper Bridge on Power Plant Parkway.
Officials said the spill does not pose a health hazard to the public. However, residents who live near the ditches are advised to keep pets from going into the oil-stained water.
