Newport News police charge Hampton man with 2011 bank robbery

On July 26, Newport News police detectives arrested Scott Bryan McCarthy, of Hampton, and charged him with robbing Old Point National Bank on Jefferson Avenue on Dec. 2, 2011, according to a police press release.

McCarthy, who is 35 and lives on Wythe Parkway, in Hampton, was arrested without incident and is charged with one count each of robbery and using a firearm while committing a felony. McCarthy is being held in Newport News City Jail.

The detectives arrested McCarthy after receiving information that identified him as the robbery suspect.

Around 2 p.m. Dec. 2, 2011, police responded to a report of a robbery at the bank. Witnesses said a man approached a teller, showed a handgun and presented a note demanding cash. The teller complied, and the robber went toward the rear of the building and left. Although there were employees and customers in the bank, there were no reported injuries.

The robber was described as white, six feet two inches tall with dark hair and a goatee, weighing about 200 pounds and wearing dark clothing.
