Hampton police arrest suspect in July 3 business robbery

The Hampton Police Division, with help from the Virginia State Police, arrested Christian Lamont Johnson of Hampton Wednesday, July 4, a man police say robbed a business Tuesday, July 3, according to a press release.

Johnson, who is 23 and lives on Bell Street in Hampton, was arrested and charged with one count each of armed robbery, using a firearm during the commission of a felony and armed burglary. At 10:19 p.m. Tuesday, Hampton Police Communications received an e911 call regarding a robbery that had just happened at the 7-Eleven store on Kecoughtan Road.

When officers arrived, they discovered that the robber went into the business, displayed a handgun and demanded cash. The man took an undisclosed amount of cash and ran out of the 7-Eleven, according to the release.

At 10:21 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, Hampton Police Communications received a w911 call from a person who said they were following the alleged robber, who was in a silver Suzuki Aerio. Officers found the vehicle near the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and 42nd Street and tried to stop it, but the driver refused to comply. Officers pursued the Suzuki north on Chestnut Avenue and then west on West Mercury Boulevard.

Police continued pursuing the vehicle until State Police took over the pursuit on the James River Bridge and arrested the driver in Chesapeake.
