Hampton residents take part in fifth annual Chesty Puller Memorial runs

Three residents from Hampton participated in the fifth annual Chesty Puller Memorial Twin Bridge 10K run Saturday, June 23.

Of the three runners, Thea M. Ganoe had the best time, completing the race in 59 minutes, 45 seconds. She was followed by Juliette Jennings and Karen Hastings with times of 1:06:13 and 1:22:20, respectfully.

The race is held in honor of Marine General Chesty Puller, a native of West Point. It benefits the West Point Historical Society and supports its efforts to create the West Point Historical Museum and the Wounded Warrior Project.

Of the 145 runners who started the race, 129 completed the USA Track and Field certified course. The course took racers through downtown, past the home of Puller, over the Mattaponi River Bridge through downtown West Point, into Eltham and back to West Point.

Proceeds from the race benefited the West Point Historical Society and the Wounded Warrior Project.

Russell Reed, 19, of Onemo, was the men's overall winner with a time of 38:42, while Stephanie Cairo, 20, of Mechanicsville, set a women's 20-24 age group record to win in 43:45.
