Hampton Lady Pirates place third in Morgan State Legacy Meet

The Hampton University women's track team finished third at the Morgan State Legacy Meet this past weekend at Hughes Stadium in Baltimore.

The meet was held on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21 and the Lady Pirates racked up 99.5 points. Morgan State was second with 100 points and Delaware won the title with 153 points.

Hampton picked up wins in three events.

Claudia Calder won the heptathlon with 4,876 points and Teiara Denmark came through with a season-best jump of 18 feet, 8 inches to win the long jump.

Hampton also won the 400 relay behind the efforts of Calder, Benita Taylor, Emmy Fraenk and Cassandra Jones. The team clocked in with a time of 3 minutes, 38.63 seconds.

Denmark was third in the triple jump with a mark of 38 feet, 6 inches and Taylor finished third in the 800, clocking in with a time of 2:13.15.

Devyn Thompson won the 1,500 in a time of 4:47.67.

The 400 relay team placed third with a time of 46.16 seconds. Denmark, Fraenk, Jones and Breana Norman were on the squad. Ermesha Fair took third in the heptathlon.

The men's team was off over the weekend, but Devan Clark competed in the javelin at the New Captains Classic at Christopher Newport University, winning the event with a throw of 179 feet, 10 inches.

Both of Hampton's track teams are back in action this week as they compete in the Penn Relays at Franklin Field. The meet begins on Thursday, April 26 in Philadelphia.
