Virginia Choral Society to present music scholarship award to Sara Martin

The Virginia Choral Society has established a scholarship fund for Sara Martin, a graduating senior from Grafton High School in Yorktown who will continue her education with a focus on music performance. 

Martin will receive a $1,000 award from the society, which established the scholarship fund in November 2009. 

Martin began piano lessons in second grade and started choir in seventh grade. She has received numerous awards for her musical accomplishments, including the director’s award in 2008 and 2011, and best soloist two years in a row with the Peninsula Children’s Chorus at Music in the Parks. 

Martin will attend George Mason University in the fall, where she will pursue a bachelor's in music education with a concentration in vocals. 

Martin will sing "Gretchen am Spinnrade” by Franz Schubert  at each of the Virginia Choral Society’s spring concerts. She will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, April 27 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 250 Fox Hill Road, Hampton, and at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 28 and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6807 Huntington Ave., Newport News.
